Cloud Cost Is an Architecture Decision, Not a Billing Problem

You cannot optimise your way out of a design that assumed infinite budget. Cost belongs in the diagram.
Cost reviews usually arrive as a panic: the bill tripled, someone opens the console, and a week disappears into rightsizing instances. That work is real, but it is downstream. The expensive decisions were made months earlier, in a diagram nobody priced.
Price the diagram
Every architecture proposal we produce carries a cost model at three traffic levels: today, ten times, and a hundred times. Not to be precise - to be directionally honest. It surfaces the designs whose economics invert under success, which is exactly the failure you cannot afford.
- Egress is the silent line item. Design data movement, not just data storage.
- Managed services are cheap until they are the hot path. Know which one you would replace first.
- Idle capacity is a design choice - autoscaling is not free, and cold starts have a business cost.
- Observability has a bill too. Sample deliberately instead of discovering it at renewal.
The African context sharpens this
When revenue is earned in naira and infrastructure is billed in dollars, a design that is merely inefficient in one market becomes unviable in another. We build with that asymmetry in the room from the first session - regional edge caching, aggressive payload discipline, and honest conversations about which features justify their runtime cost.
